چکیده

We analyze the accuracy of four methods for measuring e ective bandwidths (EBs). We also seek to point out advantages and drawbacks of the four estimators. We nd that for nite time realizations of a process the measured e ective bandwidth di ers considerably from its analytical counterpart. We also show that increasing the trace length has little impact on the accuracy of the measurements. We explain this behavior as a consequence of the intrinsic characteristics of the observed trace. We subsequently introduce the notion of \empirical e ective bandwidth" (EEB) as a measure of performance tailored to the actual values. We derive properties of the EEB which capture its behavior in the parameter space and we contrast these properties with the ones obtained for analytical e ective bandwidths. Finally, we comment on the use of EEBs in the context of connection admission

E ective Bandwidths for Multiclass Markov Fluids and Other ATM Sources

We show the existence of e ective bandwidths for multiclass Markov uids and other types of sources that are used to model ATM tra c. More precisely, we show that when such sources share a bu er with deterministic service rate, a constraint on the tail of the bu er occupancy distribution is a linear constraint on the number of sources. That is, for a small loss probability one can assume that ea...

Usage-based charging using e ective bandwidths: studies and reality

This paper studies an approach that uses the e ective bandwidth as a measure of resource usage for creating time-only ( at rate) and timeand volume-based tari s for ATM services with guaranteed QoS. We rst argue that it is advantageous for a network operator to charge according to e ective bandwidths since this would lead to higher aggregate utility and to competitive gains related to the long ...

Effective bandwidths: Call admission, traffic policing and filtering for ATM networks

In this paper we review and extend the e ective bandwidth results of Kelly [28], and Kesidis, Walrand and Chang [29, 6]. These results provide a framework for call admission schemes which are sensitive to constraints on the mean delay or the tail distribution of the workload in bu ered queues. We present results which are valid for a wide variety of tra c streams and discuss their applicability...

Resource Management in Wide-Area ATM Networks Using Effective Bandwiths

This paper is principally concerned with resource allocation for connections tolerating statistical quality of service (QoS) guarantees in a public wide-area ATM network. Our aim is to sketch a framework, based on e ective bandwidths, for call admission schemes that are sensitive to individual QoS requirements and account for statistical multiplexing. We begin by describing recent results appro...

Application of the Many Sources Asymptotic and Eeective Bandwidths to Traac Engineering

Accurate yet simple methods for tra c engineering are important for e cient management of resources in broadband networks. The goal of this paper is to apply and evaluate large deviation techniques for tra c engineering. In particular, we employ the recently developed theory of e ective bandwidths, where the e ective bandwidth depends not only on the statistical characteristics of the tra c str...
